Rare Selections of Kate E. Tirney Materials

Mrs. Tirney established a purchasing agency in New York in 1884. Evidentially, her primary business was dressmaking, providing “evening, reception and outdoor gowns and tailor-made suits and artistic millinery” to New York’ elite. She speaks occasionally of “fitters” who worked for her, as well as “modistes” in Paris and in the U.S. (Modiste is an old-fashioned term. It is someone who makes or deals in fashionable clothes, hats, etc. for women.) Although she continued to concentrate on fashions, her business soon expanded to include about everything and every service imaginable. Along about 1902 she began the publication SHOP TALK. Subscription to the agency’s service was $1.00 a year and SHOP TALK was sent free of charge. In the July 1904 issue of  SHOP TALK she says, “I buy anything on sale in New York--not alone articles and materials suitable for ladies’ wear, but Yachts, Cemetery Fences, Carousal Organs, Diving Bells, Threshing Machines, and any other odd thing you don’t know where to buy or can most readily secure through my Agency. Flowers and fruits for friends on Steamers, in Hospitals, for Funerals, etc., are promptly delivered by my own messenger. Freshness inspected and guaranteed. Dinner and Luncheon specialties, favors for all occasions, and every requisite for society functions. Fancy dress costumes hired. Tickets for travel or theaters secured in best location. Chaperons furnished for all occasions, thoroughly familiar with all places on interest in the city and vicinity. Minors or timid persons met on arrival. Dye or clean all fabrics, carpets, rugs, curtains, fine laces, etc. Have best French dyer and cleaner in the city.  Crepe refinished. Feathers and boas cleaned, dyed and curled. Gloves cleaned. Buttonholes and pinking made. Accordion and dress platings. Buttons and umbrellas covered. Fur garments re-dyed, repaired, remodeled and stored.  I do not buy second-hand goods, nor engage servants. Such commissions should never be delegated. Will Execute Any Honorable Commission.”
We’re not sure just how long it continued publication but Shop Talk enjoyed considerable success as evidenced by the advertising carried from all the fashionable businesses in New York City.  We have a number of copies of this most informative publication as described following. This is a high quality little publication on heavy coated stock paper and they are all nicely illustrated. A very enlightening commentary is offered throughout on the fashions, furnishings and customs of the times.

04500-M1195ALKE- Catalogue- WONDER WORKER SHOE MACHINERY CO., Boston, MA. n.d. The party from whom we purchased this suggested a date in 1920s. After careful examination, we think it probably dates around 1910 to 1915. Someone familiar with the New England shoe industry could probably pinpoint it more closely. A defiant dedication: "This catalog is dedicated to the United Shoe Machinery company. Mainly through its Machiavellian methods the shoe manufacturers of the world have, for years, been forced to pay enormous tribute (United charged a royalty for every pair of shoes made on their machines. ed.) to the shoe machinery trust; a trust whose methods have heretofore throttled all competition, and made one of our greatest industries (Oh!, that it were still so!! ed.) subservient to the most complete monopoly in existence. For the first time in the history of that trust, opportunity is presented to the manufacturers to become free and independent owners of their own business." Contains about seventy machines to perform every operation of shoe manufacturing. Very well illustrated. Authentic Young Men,s Fashions. Finest Selection. Edesco Woolens. Probably one of the largest dimensioned catalogues we've ever offered. Filled with heavy poster sheets offering men's suits, vests, overcoats, caps, etc. Illustrations appear on right hand page and suiting material swatches appear opposite. All seem to be present except some of the vest swatches. Hundreds of styles and materials. This type company "custom tailored" these fashions for the local merchant's customers from measurements sent them with the order. This type relationship is still alive and well. One is the Tom James Stores in major cities. This chain is owned by a high school class mate of ours form the 1950s. Large hard cover, well worn around edges, hinges cracked, but catalogue sound because of the way it is bound. Some foxing throughout and a light damp stain in upper corner near back. Net weight is 15 pounds so it will probably ship at about 20 pounds. 16-1/2"x 22-1/2"x 64 heavy poster pages. $200.00
